i understand getting offended if someone draws a piece of artwork meant to have a native american influence in some way or s/t like a character in a piece of clothing and that element isnt consistent with any native culture but if an artist says “i know this isnt traditional/100% accurate but im drawing influence from _____________ culture to some extent because a specific piece of artwork inspired me” i think thats totally fine

im greek but you dont see me slamming my ass shut and sending scalding farts barreling up through my god forsaken diaphragm every time someone draws a piece of art influenced by traditional greek art (not ancient greek art i mean somewhat contemporary fashion from the last few centuries)

if someone says “oh this is what clothing/art/etc from this culture looks like” and theyre totally wrong and blatantly dont know what theyre talking about thats one thing but if a person has clearly looked into something even a little bit i dont think they deserve to receive floods of hate mail from angry gender studies students shitting over the poor quality of their backwoods colleges and all the daddy long legs crawling around their dorm rooms or whatever makes them bitter

Not everyone on Tumblr has English as a first language.

Do not assume, straight away, that they want to offend you.

Do not assume, straight away, that they have misunderstood you DELIBERATELY.

Do not assume, straight away, that your meaning is IMMEDIATELY OBVIOUS to all concerned.

I am monolingual. I SPEAK ONLY ONE LANGUAGE and I am NOT PROUD OF IT. But seriously, the nuances of language are HUGE and even I know it.

I’ve spent a lot of time teaching students who only speak English as a second (or even third) language and really it is so easy to lose the nuances of the English language it’s not funny. So.. just… think twice before you are a dick.

Thanks.

When a skilled artists draws weird porno or elaborate fan-art that isn’t ‘wasted talent’. They are using their skills to create something that you don’t happen to understand or enjoy, but they are using their skills nonetheless.

I guess a better term for it would be ‘misdirected talent’ but it’s all subjective and really who gives a shit.

To me ‘wasted talent’ is when, due to economic or societal factors, an artist is forced to completely ignore what they’ve learned. The artist that chips away at a menial job. The artist that has a good job, but hates what they do. The artist who barely works as an artist, pounding out bad clip art and the like.

Art is risky and just about every artist has to go through a gauntlet of shitty jobs before finding something more stable, but it’s a sad thing when passionate people are forced to permanently ditch their talents in favor of working at a mediocre job that barely pays the bills.

That, to me, is wasted talent.

Everyone listen to Akumyo, a’ight.

as a bonus, porn allows artists to learn more about anatomy

I’m not bothering to reblog that whole post floating around because that idiot doesn’t need any more attention

I can’t understand why people honestly think It is cool any funny to harass artists in real life for drawing pictures they don’t like on the internet. And the people who get behind it because they don’t like that artist either? You’re just encouraging that type of behaviour and making cons worse for everyone else in the future.

These are all completely hypothetical situations because I’m not going to give any further attention to the real one that happened, but say someone runs up to someone like Buckley at a con and like, throws a drink in his face. Then they brag about it on the internet and people pat them on the back because the internet decided they don’t like Buckley based on a lot of hearsay and a comic they don’t enjoy.

If word gets around that “hey, physically messing with comic artists who draw things you don’t like is socially acceptable behaviour!”, it doesn’t take long for that kind of thing to escalate. What if people start messing with artists like Scott Ramsoomair because they don’t think they update enough? What if they go after Scott Kurtz because he has strong opinions (that he usually articulates more thoughtfully than people give him credit for)? What if Kate Beaton becomes a target because she put her site on hiatus? Andrew Hussie because he asked people to respect his copyright? If a person justifies harassment of artists by saying “they did a thing on the internet that I didn’t like” and you give them any kind of positive attention for it, you are putting a target on anyone who has every made someone on the internet angry ever. And for the record, it’s not very hard to make someone out there in the big wide web angry.

I’m getting increasingly upset anytime I see people respond to people’s art with “I GIVE UP” or “I QUIT ART” or “I’M NEVER DRAWING AGAIN.”

I mean… seriously, people? Are you listening to yourselves?

1) Have more confidence in yourself, and be patient. It’s okay if you can’t do everything in the world like everyone else immediately. That doesn’t make them better or you worse.

2) Stop making other people feel bad or guilty for sharing their work with you or being good at what they do. Telling someone that you want to give up because of what they posted is a lousy thing to do.

3) The only real difference between you and that other artist is the amount of hard work and practice they’ve put in. It’s not magic. There’s no special secret. You can do these things, too, if you stop threatening to hurl yourself off an artistic cliff every time someone posts something that you chose to see as intimidating. Everyone’s artwork has something special and unique, and everyone at every skill level sees things they admire in other artists’ work. Your work is special, even if it isn’t exactly the same as other people’s.

So just, calm down, cut yourself some slack, and stop shaming people for working hard and being good at what they do.

I’m sure you recognize a few of these exercises because I do them whenever I have spare time. I own the Heads and Hands book because I ride the trolley to and fro work so it gives me some idle time. The different characteristics of faces REALLY helped me break away from same-facing and appreciate how people are so differently built up into shapes.

Here’s a link to the books here- http://alexhays.com/loomis/

The Loomis books are public domain I use this link if I just want to quickly find a page instead of scrolling through the PDF’s. WARNING. SITE HAS A STATUE OF DAVID AS BACKGROUND. ENJOY?? BUT NSFW. I usually just right click + open new tab when I find a good page so I’m not constantly being distracted on what David has to offer.- http://fineart.sk/photo-references/andrew-loomis-anatomy-books

When sketch on the computer I usually open a page up and pin up the page with deskpins. A program I linked awhile ago that lets you pin up windows as top most.

Have fun! I’m going to make a tutorial this weekend on how I treat my lines and possibly a gif animation of me doing the back view to the muscle build ups I’m doing. I might try to livestream it, not sure yet. If I do I might just open mic it so people can ask me questions. If not, expect a ton of videogame music. It helps me feel like I’m grinding to lvl up. Yeah! Kind of dorky!

Drawing the differences in ages

1. The size and angularity of the neck and shoulders: Babies start out with thick necks, but then by the time we’re 5 or 6 our necks seem to look pretty skinny (at least I’ve found it seems to look that way in drawings). Our shoulders, obviously, start out small and get broader and broader as we get older (this is more apparent in men than in women, of course). Also I made a conscious effort to make his shoulders start out rounded and get more angular as he ages. If I’d kept going, drawing this guy into old age, I would have made the shoulders start to shrink (and get more rounded again) as he aged.

 2. The relation of the mouth to the chin: I simply made the mouth get further away from the chin as he ages, to give a feeling of a jaw that develops as he gets older. Also I made the jawline stronger and more angular with each successive age.

3. The amount of upturn in the nose: I made it turned up more in the younger drawings, and made it less so over time.

 4. The size of the forehead: We have a bigger forehead when we’re young, and it diminishes proportionally over time.

 5. The chubbiness of the cheeks: most of us have less fat in our cheeks as we age.

Flat = Funny & Depth = Dramatic

“One of the most basic and perplexing challenges a board artist faces is how to get the desired emotional response from the audience. Many times people will board a dramatic and serious scene, only to find that when they pitch it to a room full of fellow board artists, the audience doesn’t take it as it was intended and breaks into laughs instead. Or vice versa…a board artist will pitch a scene that’s meant to be funny and the room will be totally quiet, with no laughter happening at all.

A big part of what makes us feel like we should laugh at a scene or take it seriously is the visual cues that are used within the sequence. So one of the easiest ways to ensure the audience reacts to your story in the intended way is to use the right kind of visual language.” Read more

“Here are a couple more pages, full of the kind of basics that seem too obvious and simple to bother with but that can make the difference between a drawing that works and one that doesn’t. I sure wish someone would have told me this stuff when I was at CalArts, anyway, it would’ve saved me years of crummy drawings…” (via Temple of the Seven Golden Camels)
